Blackwork

Blackwork is the use of patterns to fill in areas of sewing detail.

It first became popular in the 16 th century where white or cream linen fabric was decorated with small repetitive black patterns, for clothing and soft furnishings.

The work produces a stark contrast of black decoration on a light coloured fabric, and the patterns can be used to produce tonal variations from one area to another.

We have a small picture chart of an emerging rose on our flower cross stitch page. This design is exactly square so it can be combined with our Celtic and Victorian borders and used as the centre piece.

We also have a page dedicated to cross stitch heart patterns. Here you will find two versatile designs, firstly three heart shaped balloons followed by a simple border pattern of three hearts with different patterns.
